Summer and water activities bring joy, but also risks. One of the greatest dangers is drowning, which can happen in a matter of seconds. That is why it is important to know how to prevent the risk and how to react correctly.
Prevention is key – be careful
The best protection is prevention. Follow these guidelines
• Do not leave children unattended near water, even for a few seconds;
• Do not swim alone in remote areas or places you are unfamiliar with; always have a partner with you.
• Do not underestimate the power of currents or waves;
• Do not enter the water under the influence of alcohol or other intoxicating substances.
If you notice signs that a person is drowning, act immediately.
What to do in case someone is drowning?
If someone is struggling for their life in the water or has already drowned, the seconds are decisive:
1. Own safety first – only enter the water if it is safe for you to do so. Otherwise, use an aid (swimming board, paddle, rope).
Call for help – 112/155.
3. Get the rescued person ashore place them on their back.
4. Check consciousness and breathing:
• If they are not breathing, immediately begin cardiopulmonary resuscitation – 30 chest compressions + 2 breaths. For children, it is recommended to start with 5 initial breaths and then continue at a ratio of 30:2.
• If they are breathing, place them in the recovery position and monitor their breathing.
5. Continue resuscitation until the paramedics arrive.
Why take a first aid course?
At critical moments, knowledge and the ability to act are decisive. That is why we organize AP Rescue first aid courses for broad public, where participants learn practical skills and gain confidence in acting in life-threatening situations.
